Termessos Ancient City – Antalya
Located deep within the Taurus Mountains, Termessos Ancient City is one of the most dramatic and well-preserved archaeological sites in Turkey. Hidden among dense forests inside Güllük Dağı (Mount Solymos) National Park, Termessos offers a unique combination of ancient history, breathtaking nature, and panoramic views over Antalya.
Founded by the Solymi people, believed to be descendants of the ancient Luwians, Termessos was strategically built in a mountainous valley, making it naturally fortified and extremely difficult to conquer. This powerful location played a key role in its most famous historical moment:
in 333 BC, Alexander the Great attempted to capture the city but failed, forced to abandon the siege due to Termessos’ formidable defenses and terrain.
After Alexander’s death, the city experienced periods under Ptolemaic influence, yet remarkably maintained a high degree of independence. Roman records confirm that Termessos governed itself under its own laws, a rare privilege officially recognized by the Roman Senate. Even during the Roman Imperial era, the city continued to mint its own coins, symbolizing its autonomy.
A City Preserved by Nature
Unlike many ancient cities, Termessos was never resettled after its abandonment. As a result, it remains one of the best-preserved ancient cities in Anatolia, largely untouched except for natural wear and earthquakes.
Visitors begin their exploration near the Hellenistic city walls and follow mountain paths that gradually reveal the city’s impressive structures. Along the way, you will encounter:
The Temple of Hadrian, with its monumental Ionic entrance
A partially preserved Gymnasium, once a center of education and physical training
A columned street lined with ancient shops
Advanced water channels and drainage systems, still visible today
Theater with a View
One of Termessos’ most unforgettable sights is its ancient theater, dramatically positioned on a mountainside overlooking the Antalya Gulf. From here, visitors can enjoy one of the most spectacular views of any ancient theater in the Mediterranean.
Nearby stands the Council House (Bouleuterion), preserved up to roof height, reflecting the city’s strong civic identity. The Agora, surrounded by stoas built during the reign of King Attalos II, once served as the social and commercial heart of the city.
Unique to Termessos are its interconnected rock-cut cisterns, showcasing the city’s advanced water-management system in a challenging mountainous environment.
Tombs, Legends, and Unique Finds
Termessos is also famous for its extensive necropolis areas. Among the most notable tombs is the monumental tomb of Alketas, one of Alexander the Great’s commanders. The cemetery includes richly decorated sarcophagi, many featuring shield motifs symbolizing warrior identity.
A particularly touching artifact from Termessos is the “Dog Sarcophagus”, displayed today in the Antalya Museum. Inscribed with a poetic epitaph dedicated to a beloved dog named Stefanos, it remains one of the most unique funerary monuments from antiquity.
UNESCO Heritage & Visiting Today
Thanks to its exceptional blend of archaeology and untouched nature, Güllük Dağı–Termessos National Park has been listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List since 2000.
Reaching Termessos requires a short drive from Antalya followed by a hike, making it ideal for travelers who enjoy history, nature, hiking, and photography. Comfortable walking shoes and sufficient water are strongly recommended.
