Aspendos Ancient City – Antalya

Aspendos Ancient City is one of Antalya’s most remarkable archaeological sites, world-famous for its exceptionally well-preserved Roman theatre. Founded near the Köprüçay River (ancient Eurymedon), the city flourished thanks to its strategic location, fertile lands, and access to Mediterranean trade routes.

The highlight of Aspendos is its Roman Theatre, built in the 2nd century AD by the architect Zenon during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. With a seating capacity of 15,000–20,000 spectators, the theatre is admired for its outstanding acoustics, monumental stage building, and near-perfect state of preservation—making it one of the finest surviving Roman theatres in the world.

During the Roman Imperial period, Aspendos experienced its golden age. Another impressive feature of the city is its ancient aqueduct system, stretching nearly one kilometre. These aqueducts are among the best-preserved examples of Roman water engineering and demonstrate the advanced technical skills of the era.

Aspendos continued to be inhabited during the Byzantine and Seljuk periods. Seljuk restorations, particularly to the theatre, played a crucial role in preserving the structure, allowing it to survive almost intact to the present day. In 1930, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk visited Aspendos and encouraged its restoration and continued use as a cultural venue.

Today, visitors can explore not only the theatre but also the remains of the agora, basilica, monumental fountain, council house, ceremonial arch, and ancient temples located on the hill behind it.
Since 2015, Aspendos Ancient Theatre and Aqueducts have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
