Perge Ancient City
Perge Ancient City – History & Visiting Information
Perge Ancient City is located in the Aksu district of Antalya and is believed to have existed since the Hittite period, when it was known as Parha. During the Roman era, Perge became one of the most well-planned cities in Anatolia. Renowned for its architecture and marble sculpture, excavations in Perge have uncovered numerous statues that now form the core of the Antalya Museum’s world-famous sculpture collection.
The urban plan of Perge is based on two main streets running east–west and north–south. One of the city’s most impressive structures is its well-preserved theater, with a seating capacity of approximately 15,000 spectators. The richly decorated, two-story stage building was constructed in the 2nd century AD. Many of the statues discovered here are permanently exhibited today in the Perge Theater Hall of the Antalya Museum, showcasing the distinctive and refined style of Perge sculpture.
Another remarkable structure of the ancient city is the stadium, located north of the theater. Built in the 2nd century BC, it is one of the best-preserved ancient stadiums in Türkiye and could accommodate around 12,000 spectators. The city’s grandeur is further reflected in its rectangular agora, monumental fountains, baths, towers, and elegant colonnaded streets.
Perge also holds great significance in Christian history. Saint Paul, one of the most important figures of Christianity, arrived in Perge via the Aksu River during his missionary journeys. As mentioned in the Bible, both the city and the river are considered sacred sites within Christian tradition.
Representing the Late Classical, Hellenistic, and predominantly Roman Imperial periods, Perge Ancient City is an outstanding example of ancient urban planning. Since 2009, it has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List as part of the “Ancient Cities of the Lycian Civilization.”
