Simena Ancient City (Kaleköy) – Antalya Travel Guide

The ancient city of Simena, known today as Kaleköy, is located between Kaş and Demre in Antalya Province. Positioned on a small peninsula directly opposite Kekova Island, Simena is one of the few settlements in Turkey accessible primarily by sea, making it a truly unique destination.

History of Simena

Although the name Simena was first mentioned by Pliny the Elder in the 1st century AD, archaeological evidence—including Lycian inscriptions and silver coins found in nearby Aperlai—shows that the city dates back to at least the 4th century BC.

During the Lycian League period, Simena was represented by Aperlai, and after the region became part of the Roman Empire, Simena continued to exist as an independent city.

A City Partially Submerged by the Sea

One of Simena’s most striking features is that parts of the ancient city were damaged by earthquakes and later submerged underwater. Along the shoreline, visitors can still see:

• Underwater staircases

• Lycian-style sarcophagi

• Ancient harbor structures

• Remains of buildings beneath the sea

Simena Castle & Ancient Theater

The most dominant structure of the site is Simena Castle, reflecting the city’s strategic importance. The castle was actively used during the Middle Ages.

Inside the fortress lies one of the smallest ancient theaters in Lycia, carved directly into the rock:

Other Notable Ruins

As you climb the steep path from the shore to the castle, you’ll pass numerous ancient remains intertwined with modern village life:

• Rock-cut tombs and sarcophagi, including one belonging to Mentor, son of Idargus

• Water cisterns

• Remains of a structure used successively as a temple, church, and later a mosque

• A large necropolis area with rock and house-type tombs

Near the shoreline, ruins of a Roman bath complex dating to around 79 BC can also be seen. An inscription indicates it was dedicated to Emperor Titus by the people and council of Aperlai and other Lycian cities.

UNESCO World Heritage Candidate

Simena is included in the “Ancient Cities of the Lycian Civilization”, which has been on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List since 2009, highlighting its outstanding cultural and historical value.
