A Capital of Ancient Lycia

Known as “Zemuri” in Lycian inscriptions, Limyra has been inhabited since at least the 5th century BC. The city reached its golden age during the early 4th century BC, under the rule of Lycian King Pericles, when Limyra served as the capital of Lycia.

Although the region was officially under Persian control during this period, historical sources indicate that Limyra enjoyed a high degree of autonomy and prosperity.

Roman & Byzantine Heritage

Limyra experienced a second flourishing period during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD under Roman rule. Despite suffering damage from earthquakes, the city was repeatedly rebuilt. During the Byzantine era, Limyra became an important bishopric center before being abandoned in the 8th–9th centuries following Arab invasions.
