Kekova – Antalya
Located in the Demre district of Antalya, Kekova is not a single ancient city but a remarkable region named after Kekova Island, the largest island in the area. Stretching along the coastline and forming a narrow strait, Kekova lies approximately 200 km west of Antalya and 250 km east of Fethiye.
The region is famous for its picturesque islands, crystal-clear bays, and rich Lycian heritage. Kekova Island and its surroundings are home to numerous sunken cities, ancient harbor structures, Lycian rock-cut tombs, sarcophagi partially submerged in the sea, and ruins scattered along the coastline. Among the highlights are the ancient settlements of Üçağız (Theimiussa) and Kaleköy (Simena), where history and daily village life blend seamlessly.
Beyond its archaeological significance, Kekova is renowned for its unique natural landscape, featuring rugged coastlines, geological formations, rich marine life, and diverse Mediterranean vegetation. Due to its exceptional cultural, historical, and natural value, the Kekova region has been listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List since 2000.
In addition to Kekova Island, the area includes İç Ada, Toprak Ada, Aşırlı Ada, and Kişnali Ada. As part of the Kaş–Kekova Special Environmental Protection Area, the region is strictly preserved. Since land access is limited, exploring Kekova by boat is the best and most immersive way to experience its hidden coves, sunken ruins, and breathtaking scenery.
How to Visit Kekova
The best and most popular way to visit Kekova is by boat. Since land access to the region is limited and most historical sites are located along the coastline or partially underwater, daily boat tours offer the most complete experience.
Most Kekova boat tours depart from Üçağız (Demre) and include cruising over the Sunken City, swimming breaks in crystal-clear bays, and photo stops near Kaleköy (Simena). Some tours also allow free time to explore Kaleköy village and climb up to Simena Castle for panoramic views.
Visitors coming from Antalya, Kemer, or Kaş usually reach Demre by car or organized transfer before joining a boat tour. Guided tours often include transportation, lunch on board, and informative commentary about the Lycian ruins.
Important note: Swimming is not allowed in protected archaeological zones, but designated swimming bays are included in all tours.
For a relaxed and immersive experience, boat tours are highly recommended to fully enjoy Kekova’s natural beauty and historical atmosphere.
